Science Essays
What is the meaning of word 'science'? This question may appear simple to answer: anyone knows that subjects such as physics, chemistry, and ecology comprise science, whilst subjects such as drawing, music, and religion do not. However, when as philosophers we inquire what science is, that is not the kind of respond we wish for. We do not want a simple listing of the activities that are typically called 'science'. Rather, we inquire what general characteristic all the things on that listing divide, i.e. what it is that formulates something as a science. Stated this way, our inquiry is not so insignificant.
Certainly science is just the effort to comprehend, clarify, and forecast the world we live in. This is definitely a rational answer. But is this the complete picture? In any case, a variety of religions also try to comprehend and elucidate the world; however, religion is not generally considered as a subdivision of science. Likewise, astrology and fortunetelling are efforts to forecast the future, but the majority of people would not portray these activities as science. Or take history. Historians attempt to comprehend and clarify what occurred in the past, but history is generally categorized as an arts branch not a science branch. As with numerous theoretical questions, the question 'what is science?' happens to be more complicated than it seems at first sight.
